The Communal Theater Company exists to create spaces of healing, connection, and communion through the art of theater. We present live productions that enrich culture, entertain with purpose, and inspire the communities we serve. At the same time, we are committed to cultivating the talents and skills of theatermakers through workshops, training, and collaborative practice, ensuring that our work not only tells stories but also nurtures the storytellers themselves.
Performed at The Flea
Refounded in 2021, The Flea is a downtown hub for culture, creativity, and community with a mission to support and invest in experimental art by Black, brown, and queer artists. We aim to be a haven where those who push the limits of cultural expression can thrive; and where audiences of all identities can be delighted, challenged, and forge deep relationships with the artists, their work, and each other. The Flea owns and operates a state-of-the-art, LEED-certified performance center in Tribeca that houses three distinct, intimate theaters designed to encourage creativity while supporting production economies of scale. Dr. Elizabeth Ostler is a Brooklyn-based theater-maker specializing in directing and puppetry, with over two decades of experience creating theater in New York and Utah. She is the Founder of Communal Theater Company. Liz has collaborated with companies including St. Ann’s Warehouse, Theatre Barn, Life Jacket Theatre, Adjusted Realist, Drama of Works, Riverton Arts, Estrogenius Festival, Prospect Theater Company, and Pioneer Theatre Company. Jessica is a multidisciplinary designer and educator, with interests in theatre, dance, and site specific installations. New York designs include productions with La Mama Experimental Theatre Club, The Adjusted Realists, A.R.T. New York, and 59E59. Regionally, she works with Salt Lake Acting Company, SB Dance, Utah Shakespeare Festival, and Pioneer Theatre. Jess serves as Professor of Theatre Design and Chair of the School of Performing Arts at Weber State University.

Riley Lathrom is a Brooklyn based Scenic Designer and Artist. She is thrilled to be part of the team for her first Communal Theatre production! Recent credits include Set Designer for Trail to Oregon (Wild Project), The End of Incorporated Filth (Dixon Place), The Revolutionists (Brooklyn College). She received her MFA in Set Design from Brooklyn College. Riley is the 2022 recipient of the USITT Bernard R. Works Mastercrafts Award in Scenic Painting and the 2025 Schubert Scholar at Brooklyn College. Enjoy the show!

Candice Nielsen
Costume Designer
Candice Nielsen is excited for the opportunity to be designing costumes for Communal Theater Company. She earned her BA from BYU and MFA from Sarah Lawrence College studying Theatrical Costume Design. Candice currently resides in Salt Lake City, Utah with her husband and 3 kids. She has recently designed costumes for Hale Center Theatre and The Ruth Theater in Utah. Recent productions include, Once on this Island (The Ruth), Peter Pan Goes Wrong (HCT), The Prince of Egypt (HCT), The Addams Family (HCT), See How They Run (HCT), Gin Mummy (UVU), Cosi fan Tutte (BYU), Crazy for You (BYU), and Too Soon (Film). She has worked on such television shows as Law & Order, Blue Bloods, Almost There, Cupid, Blood & Oil and such films as Eat, Pray, Love, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, and Tomorrow Comes Today. Other theatrical productions include, The Sound of Music, Annie, Tartuffe, Hamlet, Ghost Dancer, Dubliners, Bright Ideas, and more. She has also designed contemporary dance costumes for SALT Dance company in Utah. Candice has really loved working with Liz and the entire production team on this special project. SisterPlay has been a labor of love and radical acceptance.
Nick Luna
Composer
Nick Luna is a composer, songwriter, and producer based in Queens, NY. He has had vocal arrangements premiered by The Westminster Chorus, the Newfangled Four, Choral Chameleon, the Phoenicians, and many more. In 2025, Jordan Rakita cited two of Nick’s arrangements in his doctoral research paper, entitled “Todos en Armonía: Examining the Connections Between Mariachi and Barbershop.” Later that year, Nick co-wrote, mixed and mastered the debut EP “Reason Being” from artist Matthew Capuano-Rizzo. Under the moniker of transmitter.music, Nick is releasing his debut album of original songs, titled “longing across space and time” on all platforms in October of 2026. This project explores three facets of longing; fantasy as longing for something that does not yet exist, pining as longing for something that no longer exists in your life, and introspection as longing for a version of yourself that doesn’t exist.

Joshua Moore is a Sound Designer and A1 based in Northern Colorado who specializes in audience immersive sound design. He is a recent graduate of Colorado State University where he studied sound design and stage management. He is beyond thrilled to be designing his first production in New York City. Matthew Mastromatteo is an actor, director, intimacy professional, and educator based in New York City. They hold their MFA in Theatre Arts: Acting from Long Island University: C.W. Post. Matthew teaches acting, voice, and movement at several institutions in NYC. An integration specialist, Matthew is excited by the union of body, voice, and spirit in performance. Meaghan Sabino

Meaghan Sabino is a theater maker originally from the woods of NYS, now based in NYC focusing on writing, directing, and dramaturgy. Sabino is concerned with creating complex cultural conversations that are intersectional and that celebrate ambivalence. Equal parts artist and academic, Sabino seeks to create theater that is intimate, cerebral, and visceral - felt in both the head and gut. She is a graduate of NYU Tisch where she trained at Playwrights Horizons Theater School, the Experimental Theater Wing, wrote & directed the 2024 Student Works production, and studied abroad in Berlin.

Archer Ezra
Assistant Costume Designer
Archer Ezra is an NYC-based costume designer, assistant, and fabricator. A recent graduate of The New School, their BA thesis explored the intersection of costume design, Greek drama, and fairy tales. Archer’s costume practice relies on building a foundation of trust and continuous consent with their team and actors, based on the belief that costumes look best on comfortable bodies. Previously they designed costumes for The Body of Christ (Queens Short Play Festival, International Human Rights Arts Festival.) Archer is delighted and grateful for the opportunity to work with Communal Theater, Liz, Candice, and the entire team of SisterPlay!
